To be eligible to challenge Idaho POST Academy, the officer must have worked as a full time peace officer and been certified or commissioned by another state or federal government within the last five years. Or a student who has completed a Basic Academy that is equivalent to the Idaho Basic Academy within the last 3 years.  The officer must also meet the Minimum Standards for Employment PDF formats).

Before an officer can start the challenge process, they must first be hired by a law enforcement agency in Idaho as a peace officer.

The challenge process consists of the following requirements:

  • Submits a POST Certification Challenge Packet to POST, which must include copies of transcripts, certificates, diplomas, or other documents that substantiate the officer’s training and experience.
  • No officer will be allowed to start the challenge process without a complete challenge packet on file at POST.
  • Attends and passes an approved course of study in Idaho Law and;
  • Passes the following tests administered by a POST Training Specialist;
    • The POST certification examination approved by the Council (the officer shall be allowed two (2) attempts to pass the exam. The attempts must be no less than thirty (30) days apart and no more than six (6) months apart. If an officer fails both attempts, he/she must successfully complete the POST Basic Training Course to be certified.)
    • The POST Short Course for qualification of firearms and
    • The POST Academy physical fitness test;
  • Completes his/her probationary period on the hiring agency.
    (The applicant must have completed at least six (6) months satisfactory probationary period, which may include basic training academy time, continuously with the employing Law Enforcement Agency when applying for certification.
