PROFESSIONAL ORIENTATION

Courses in this area provide officers with a basic orientation to their chosen profession.  The courses cover the State’s requirements for successful completion of the Idaho Peace Officers Standards and Training Academy; an understanding of the rules and regulations of the Academy and the academic requirements; and the primary function of the Idaho Peace Officers Standards and Training Council.

The topics covered in this area deal with the many aspects of the criminal justice system.  The courses cover understanding all of the agencies and services that contribute to the system.  The success of the criminal justice system depends upon trust and partnerships between agencies and developing relationships to pursue community goals together.

POLICE and the LAW

An orientation to methods, practices, and procedures in Idaho Criminal Law.  Course work includes instruction in basic laws and powers derived from the U.S. and Idaho Constitutions, classification of crimes, punishments, and procedural law dealing with search and seizure and rules of evidence.

PRACTICAL POLICE SKILLS and HEALTH AND FITNESS

These courses prepare the officer for the technical aspects of police work.  The courses cover the operation, maintenance, use, and control of the tools of the trade; as well as the techniques needed to affect an arrest. Lectures include nutrition, fitness lifestyles, and health.  A first aid course for police officers, including cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is included in this series of instruction.

INVESTIGATIONS

A series of basic courses in preliminary investigations designed for the initial officer responding to a crime scene.  Introductions to scientific aids and examinations, laboratory procedures, and the collection of evidence.  Applications of specific investigative techniques for specific offenses are studied.

PATROL PROCEDURES

A series of courses designed to familiarize students with the patrol operations in the community.  Varied facets of patrol procedures, including the sensitive handling of citizen crisis situations as well as the technical aspects of the patrol function are studied. Also several hands‑on situations are presented for the officer to gain practical experience of the techniques presented.
