K9 Teams - Spotlight!

Clint Brown and Rex
Bannock County Sheriff's Office

Rex and myself have been a team for just over four years. Rex is an 8 year old Malinois and like most Mals he is very high strung. He enjoys long walks in the cool of the evening, then we spend the night reciting poetry by the fireplace nestled under a blanket together... OK that part is not true. Most of it. Ha ha ~ We have been very successful in patrol and narcotics work. A story... Last winter I was dispatched to a very rural area to the report of a suspicious man hiding in his car. During the investigation the man began to fight. I took him to the ground twice but could not subdue him even after being pepper sprayed. The man fled down a hillside towards a large ravine. Rex was sent. After catching and biting, the man began swinging him around in circles with Rex still hanging on. I ran through the snow and tackled him. He yelled that he was giving up. While on his back with him face down in about a foot of snow I had Rex release. Immediately upon his release the man began to fight again, striking me with swinging elbows while trying to force me off of him. Again Rex was allowed to bite him. Again he gave up. This happened one more time before I kept Rex on the bite while I handcuffed the suspect. He was treated at the hospital, taken to jail and OR'd the next day.  --Clint Brown (click on photos below to see larger image)
